Ingrid Burkett provides her insights into how social enterprises can use the Business Model Canvas to understand and communicate their business models more effectively.

“When I first discovered the Business Model Canvas (BMC) and tried to apply it to social enterprises I believed, like many others, that social enterprises and not-for-profit organisations needed their own ‘special’ canvas.

“As I worked with the BMC in and around the social enterprise sector I came to realise that this was not the case – however, I also realised that there were some ‘special’ things about social enterprises that could easily be reflected in the BMC using a few simple adaptations.

“As I shared my learnings with others in the sector there were numbers of requests for me to provide some written materials. So, this is my attempt at documenting my learnings.”
