As a Support Coordinator at i’ara Support Coordination, Elenoa Bolawaqatabu (pictured), assists NDIS participants and their families to access services around Far North Queensland.

Her role links participants to Allied Health therapists, community services, and supports in finding solutions to help them in their daily lives.

Through WorkAbility Qld and project partner The Growing Space, Elenoa recently joined 18 support coordinators from around Queensland to complete a three day NDIS Supports Coordination workshop designed to support emerging roles within the NDIS.

Currently Supports Coordinators are one of the most in-demand roles across Queensland as the number or NDIS-registered participants continue to grow.

“Being new to this role I had knowledge gaps.”

“I had knowledge gaps in who to see, where to go, whom do I ask for what,” Eleanoa said.

“My goal in attending the workshop was to learn as much as I could from presenters, other Coordinators and their experiences.”

As part of the workshops there is a focus to build capacity of participants through innovative planning, supports and investing in them to act autonomously and be able to grow and develop.

Workshop content is expansive and helps individuals to understand:

  • Frameworks
  • Governance
  • Human Rights and legislation
  • Onboarding new clients
  • Price guides
  • Plan implementation Psychosocial Disability
  • Behaviour Support and Restrictive Practices
  • Plan reviews
  • Advocacy
  • Innovation

The program had a huge impact on building Elenoa’s knowledge and support coordination efforts.

“I learnt that we are all in the same boat.”

“There is always someone who can assist you [The course] gave me confidence to do my job and ask if I wasn’t sure of anything,” she said.

Since completion of the workshop Elenoa has shared her learnings with colleagues, and implemented these in her everyday work – helping to benefit her clients in many ways.

“All participants require someone to listen to; assist them, point them in the right direction.”

“I believe every little bit helps and to see little improvements with our participants makes the job so worthwhile.”

“It is extremely satisfying to watch them grow and blossom.”
